March 2010
Thermo Fisher Scientific highlight its comprehensive portfolio of offerings for biobanks and biorepositories during the Biobanking 2010 conference, held at the Earls Court Conference Centre, London, in February. Thermo Fisher Scientific has the world’s widest range o offerings for biobanks, from biospecimen collection, processing, testing and storage to sample and data management. The end-to-end portfolio includes centrifuges, concentrators, freezers, robotics, two-dimensional (2D) barcodes, microplate readers, mass spectrometers and comprehensive services that enable turn-key biobanking solutions.

To maintain sample integrity and drive life science research and discovery, accurate, compliant and efficient management of biospecimens is critical. Thermo Scientific Nautilus biospecimen tracking software is specifically designed to address the challenges of specimen collection, tracking and storage. The software is designed for data capture, location management, chain-of-custody and handling assurance requirements. Furthermore, Nautilus enables sample request management, consent management and instrument integration and automation. The result is that biobanks can accelerate their development and value by providing users with better logistical and operational support, a more comprehensive understanding of the associated specimen information, tools that automate timely and error-prone processes and real-time information for faster, more informed decisions.

Fisher BioServices also exhibited at the conference and demonstrated how it supports all sectors of life science and clinical research. The Fisher BioServices’ exhibit showcased comprehensive turn-key solutions for all biobanking and biorepository needs including services for collection kits, transportation, processing, testing, storage and data management. Fisher BioServices currently manages more than 170,000,000 samples worldwide, and recently was selected as the National Children’s Study (NCS) biological and environmental sample repository partner. The study will examine the effect of environmental influences on the health and development of 100,000 children across the USA, following them from before birth until the age of 21.
